Marble Falls football reveals positives through 7 on 7

The Marble Falls Independent School District’s football program completed three weeks of 7-on-7 play at the Burnet May League May 18.

Burnet head coach Ben Speer and the Bulldogs had both Bulldog Field and the Burnet Middle School stadium open so that four games could happen at the same time. The league featured the Bulldogs, the Mustangs and the Llano Yellow Jackets.

Marble Falls head coach Keri Timmerman and many of his position coaches stayed with the varsity as they battled the Bulldogs and the Jackets. Rising junior quarterbacks Anderson Liscum and Crawford Maddox alternated series. Timmerman serves as the program’s quarterback coach.

Though the two players are the same ages, they have one clear distinction. Liscum is left handed and Maddox is right handed. That difference dictates tendencies that go beyond the obvious to fans, Timmerman said.

“Yeah there’s a natural spin that occurs,” he said. “But I think more so (that) it’s not so much about the receiver’s route, the receiver’s understanding, that I think it’s the quarterback’s understanding where they lean their ball. We watch the couple balls with either Crawford or Anderson throwing to their right or left and just a ball being let out – let out out of bounds where the receiver couldn’t get it. And a lot of is because of how they released and where they released because he’s left-handed or because he’s right-handed. But no I don’t think it’s affected the receiver, I don’t think, as much really.”

That’s because the quarterbacks have been on target with more of their passes during May 2026 than they were in May 2025. And the last three weeks have revealed plenty about the players.

Top of the list is their speed, and that speaks to two factors – improved quickness and understanding of the passing scheme. That’s illustrated by the running backs and receivers getting to their spots quicker and are turning to look for the ball at a faster rate.

Second, the quarterbacks are throwing the ball harder and farther. A year ago, passes often hit the turf in front of the intended targets. This year, passes are either to hands and chests or are overthrown. Both scenarios illustrate arm strength. Credit Anderson and Maddox for committing to the regular weight-lifting sessions and their importance to the Mustangs. During the baseball season, where each also is an infielder and pitcher, Maddox talked about the decision to attend multiple lifting sessions during the week with his teammates. Those choices have been evident on the gridiron.

And third, the ultimate compliment to the Mustangs may come from the opponents themselves. Last year as the Marble Falls offense was taking the field in the first week, opposing players chuckled on the sideline as they watched balls flutter out of hands or thrown into the turf. There hasn’t been any of that this year.

Memorial Day weekend signals the end of the Burnet league and the athletic departments are taking a week off before starting a busy month.

First up is the Burnet 7-on-7 State Qualifier Tournament Saturday, May 30, at Bulldog Field.

The Mustangs are in pool B and will face Fredericksburg at 9 a.m., Wimberley at 10:30 a.m. and Burnet at noon. Pool A consists of Austin LBJ, Bandera, Lago Vista and Llano. The pool winners will meet in the championship at 1:45 p.m. and the tournament champion will win the automatic berth into the state tournament in July.

The Mustangs will compete in the Llano June League each Monday that begins at 5 p.m. June 1 at Llano Stadium. The other two teams that will play are Burnet and San Saba. Each team will play two contests per week.
